Beautiful Character developments in Netflix’s SEX EDUCATION.

Pop Culture, Mostly.

Season 3 of Netflix’s Sex Education was released yesterday, and just like its predecessors, it was yet another clever and enjoyable ride. Expect some of the sub-plots were uninteresting and rather unnecessary. Yes, I am talking about Cal x Jackson. Although, I still really like the fact that every character has a proper arc and it is not just about “Otis x Maeve”. So, we have seen quite some growth in the students at Moordale Secondary. I am writing about the 3 most interesting character developments in the entirety of the show. PS: Don’t read it if you haven’t seen the show yet.

ADAM:

Started as yet another bully in every teenage drama. Adam has quite a lot happened to him over the course of three seasons. He has gone from being a guy who flashed himself to everyone in the school’s cafeteria to a person discovering himself in a coat that he didn’t think he would fit in. With Adam and Eric having their short episode in detention together to him getting sent to the military school. He has faced a lot and even though season 2 ended on a high note with him getting together with Eric and accepting that in front of everybody seemed like a happy ending but unfortunately, it wasn’t. There was more to his story than that.

With season 3 we start to see him getting hesitant around people about his identity. It’s true that he accepted himself being a gay person in front of everyone, but it was rather an impulsive decision than pure courage. We see him struggling with his identity and finding ways to communicate and express himself better; a skill that he lacked hugely, and he is somewhat successful but this isn’t going to be easy. It is supposed to take time. The time that Eric couldn’t give him. After the break-up, rather than being a raging bull and trying to get back with him just like how he did with Aimee, he acted very maturely to attend to the affairs that he had later that day. I am not saying that he wasn’t sad and not expressing his anger and frustration made him a better person but he was just mature enough to behave appropriately. Just like every young adult should.

RUBY:

Well well, from being the most annoying character in the previous seasons to being a heartthrob in this, she grew quite a lot. I am not going to debate how Otis and she were a better couple than Maeve and Otis might ever be; even though everybody was rooting for them to get together for 2 seasons straight. Their relationship was supposedly meant to end. It just left us wanting more of it and made us even sadder. Since the first season, Ruby was portrayed as this “Mean Girl” who doesn’t seem to care about anything. And it’s not like now she has transitioned into a sweet person who is just so kind and cares about everyone. It is just nice to see that she comes to care about some people, I can’t tell you how badly I sobbed when she put down that telephone though.

Anyways, I believe why everyone seems to like this character so much this season is because we got to see how vulnerable and insecure a person could be irrespective of what they portray to the outside world. Although we did get a glimpse of it in season 2, it didn’t allow us to believe that it was leading us to something like this. Probably, that is the reason why it was more rewarding to watch her show the emotional and vulnerable sides.

MICHAEL:

I was wondering whether to include Mr. Groff or Erin in this third slot. Finally, Michael made the cut. Similar to the characters I talked about above, he also had an unusual journey. Getting removed from the position of headmaster and getting separated from his family, Mr. Groff is kind of going through a lot. This season, struggling in the aftermath of Season 2, we see the character’s back story, and why he is how he is.

Living with his brother, we see his insecurities around being called a failure. Although, the trailers of this season made us believe he will still be fixated upon his previous job. He actually tries to move on and re-discover himself. It’s a pretty decent character arc if you ask me.
